In this blog post, we'll outline the critical elements needed to turn your gym dreams into a thriving business reality.

Develop a business plan: Before diving into the world of gym ownership, it's crucial to create a comprehensive business plan. This document should include your gym's mission, target market, financial projections, marketing strategy, and operational details. A well-crafted business plan will serve as a roadmap for your gym's success and help you secure funding from investors or lenders.

Secure funding: Speaking of funding, opening a gym can be a capital-intensive endeavor. Depending on the size and scope of your gym, you may need to secure financing through loans, grants, or investments. Be sure to explore all available options and create a solid financial plan to ensure your gym's financial stability.

Choose the right location: The success of your gym will hinge on its location. Look for a site that is easily accessible, visible, and in close proximity to your target market. Consider factors such as foot traffic, parking availability, and the presence of competitors in the area.

Obtain necessary permits and licenses: Running a gym requires various permits and licenses, including a business license, certificate of occupancy, and insurance coverage. Check with your local authorities to determine which permits and licenses are required in your area and ensure that you meet all necessary requirements.

Invest in quality gym equipment: The quality and variety of your gym equipment will play a significant role in attracting and retaining members. Research different equipment manufacturers and suppliers to find the best options for your gym's budget and needs.

Hire qualified staff: A gym's success is only as good as its staff. Hire experienced and certified trainers, instructors, and front desk personnel to provide exceptional customer service and support to your members.

Implement gym management software: Streamline your gym's operations and improve member engagement with gym management software. Look for a platform like MIS, that offers features such as member management, scheduling, billing, reporting, and marketing tools.

Develop a marketing strategy: Launching your gym is just the beginning. To attract and retain members, you'll need to develop a solid marketing strategy that includes targeted advertising, social media campaigns, and community outreach.
Foster a sense of community: Encourage member engagement and create a supportive, inclusive atmosphere by hosting events, offering group classes, and providing personalized coaching and support.

Continuously improve and adapt: The fitness industry is constantly evolving, so it's essential to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies. Continuously evaluate your gym's performance, listen to member feedback, and make necessary adjustments to ensure long-term success.

By following these essential steps, you'll be well on your way to opening a successful gym that meets the needs of your community and helps people achieve their fitness goals. Good luck on your journey to gym ownership!

Are Your Members Driving Each Other Nuts?

Do you have days when patrons just can’t get along? Do some customers constantly stir up drama?

Arguments between members are going to break out. Any number of things can set them off:

An obnoxious male member won’t stop hitting on women after they tell him to stop.

One know-it-all keeps telling more experienced members how to hold the weights properly (and is probably totally wrong).

One girl always spends an hour on the elliptical during peak hours when she is supposed to be limited to 25 minutes.
Disputes and frustrations are a reality every business needs to deal with. Fitness centers are no exception.

Nobody likes dealing with drama. But it has to be done. Minor issues will add up. If you don’t tackle them head on, patrons will get frustrated and bail on you.

What do you do when a dispute surfaces?

Don’t Play Favorites

Be fair to both parties too. One of the patrons could be your drinking buddy or the kid brother of the girl you met on Tinder. Don’t be afraid to ruffle their feathers a little if they’re wrong. Other patrons will notice if you play favorites.

End the Drama – Don’t Egg It On

Try to not be a drill sergeant over every issue. It’s best to take a firm but low-key approach first. One visitor may feel something is a big deal but there may be a very simple solution. Most people don’t want to make a federal case out of everything.

Take a Harder Hand with Repeat Offenders

Does a patron keep spending too much time on the elliptical, even after you told her to stop? Does the creepy guy keep hitting on girls after you told him to cut it out twice?

Start laying down the law. You can’t let this nonsense keep happening. A few bad apples can cause major damage to the club’s reputation if you let them.

Some people don’t get the message without serious consequences. When it comes to guys harassing women, you need to threaten expulsion after the first incident. Don’t let it slide.

You are running a club, not a daycare center. But some patrons may make you forget that sometimes. The good news is that these problems aren’t all that common unless you have a few people that created a toxic culture. You need to get ahead of these problems so the rest of your customers want to keep coming back.

Starting Your Own Gym

Owning and managing a gym is the dream of most personal trainers and exercise buffs. While this is a noble goal, few have given much thought to what it takes to building and managing a successful gym. A gym is first and foremost a business and as with any business, starting out requires a ton of work. Before starting your gym, here are a few things you need to do;

1 Research: To have your dream come true, you'd want to do a lot of research. Yes, you know a lot about coaching and exercise but do you know how to draw up a good business plan? How about getting insurance? Equipment? Checked out the competition? What kind of gym layout are you considering? Payroll taxes? All these and more are things you need to consider.

There's an amazing lot to know so be prepared to dig out your books and start reading up. One easy way to avoid mistakes while considering this is to meet with established gym owners and pick their brains! Ask a lot of questions while building a strong network.

2 Finance: A lot of money goes into starting a business and opening a fitness facility is no easy feat. Gym equipment, flooring, rent, utilities are a few of the expenses you'd need to take care of, and except you have a ton of money stashed somewhere, you'd need to source for funding.
It is advisable to get professional help while doing this to ensure you get only the best deals. Also, you should have saved up a good amount of money to avoid borrowing heavily as starting a business while being in debt puts a lot more pressure on you.

3 Management: Even though you're just starting up someone needs to manage your accounts and see to the running of your gym; keeping track of clients, their schedules and bill payments. You know who that is? YOU! Be prepared to act as secretary, accountant, manager and whatnot as you begin this journey to having a successful gym. Already you'd be keeping odd hours as a personal trainer, and it might all seem overwhelming having to balance accounts as well. Not to worry there's the MIS.IO software to help relieve this burden and grow your business.

It has features that'd help you manage your client database, schedules, draw up agreements and waivers, ensure easy management of member invoices while also helping you keep track of member bills among others. It helps to greatly simplify your workload freeing up your time to take care of other needs. Click here for more information

4 Certification: Getting certified as a personal trainer before starting out is a plus as it helps you get a feel of the business before you eventually take that leap. It also helps lend credibility to your brand and makes it easier to get funding. You should also be prepared to pay to renew your employees certification
Opening a fitness facility is no walk through the park and can be very exhausting. Ensure you're well informed and be prepared to devote your time to it. It's a tough journey but well worth it in the end.

4 Amazing Ways That MIS Can Help You Increase Your Client Base

Strong and long-lasting relationships help you to determine the long-term success of your business. Building strong client relationships these days requires an effective client relationship management tool.

Whether you are managing a Gym or virtually any kind of membership-model business, MIS is a readily available management software that will help you grow your client base. Here are 4 amazing ways MIS will build your client base.

By Asking for and working with feedback.
One major feature of this membership software is that it allows you to gain access to feedback from previous clients to figure out your areas of strength and weaknesses. Clients see this follow up as a means of touching base, and their sincere feedbacks will help you pick and work on the areas that you are lagging behind.
Eighty percent of potential consumers will trust online reviews just like personal recommendations. So this software lets your past clients encourage new buyers to join your client list.

By Creating client communication.
The excellent communication platform that this application provides helps solidify your relationship with existing clients. It is important to be informed about the needs of your clients. The more you understand your clients, the more you can support and motivate them. This will make your clients feel like more than just a number.
Building a personal contact with your clients is very important. By knowing your clients better, you can easily work into their plans of achieving their goals.
Normally, you can build up a relationship with clients around your business area, but what happens to all the other hours in a week when your client is not around your business area? This is where the MIS app can help, by offering the opportunity to communicate with your client wherever they are.

By establishing a strong client base.
Finding you firms niche is key to expanding your business. Before you can diversify your business, you need to focus on doing your service very well, and this is one of the many things that MIS helps you to do.
This will help your firm to hold true pleasing clients.
The software helps you to create marketing personas so that you will know the type of clients you will be working with and build your business efforts towards them.

Provides an agreement feature that helps you manage the agreements of hundreds of new clients electronically.
This feature of MIS allows businesses to create agreement and waiver templates so that new members can electronically sign during the process of sign up. The work involved in manually maintaining your customer's paper agreement can be difficult, and that's why MIS have the capabilities of keeping all the signed agreements of new members. Storing your signed agreements on our platform will help take away the danger of misplacing agreements especially when they are done manually for hundreds of new clients.

Conclusion.
Building and improving new client relationships can be done with or without membership software. However, MIS gives your communication efforts a wider reach, it saves plenty of time by taking over all the repeated manual tasks and giving you an opportunity to build an interesting community that reaches outside the walls of your business.

The Genius of Fitness

“The moment my legs begin to move my thoughts begin to flow.” Henry David Thoreau

Some Science Behind Fitness and Brain Function

Fitness, as it relates to peak brain performance, has been recognized for at least a few thousand years. Greeks during the classical age saw physical and mental fitness as complementary pursuits. Students at all educational levels were required to train both their minds and bodies rigorously. In fact, Aristotle wrote what may have been some of the world’s first athletic training manuals.

The Greeks were fairly brilliant when it came to the study of science, though in Aristotle’s heyday, the benefits of physical training as it related to learning were based mostly on observation, as opposed to chemistry. Neurotransmitters weren’t discovered until the early 1900s. Over the past hundred years, studies of the brain’s chemistry have revealed many answers – along with many more questions.

Our disclosure – we’re not chemists. But as fitness fans, we are interested in this intriguing subject, so we’ll share our laymen’s understanding of it with you. Even in laymen’s terms, it’s pretty complex stuff – enough to fill several emails (and we just may do that). Of all the reading we’ve done, though, a few really surprising and interesting things jumped out at us. We’re gonna focus this email on exercise as it affects one right, and one left, brain function.

BDNF – The Most Interesting Chemical We’ve Learned About Recently

Lots of good chemistry happens during exercise. We’re not gonna talk about all of it, or even most of it. In fact, we’re only gonna talk about BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) because this brain protein is pretty fascinating stuff.

Our brains interpret exercise as a type of stress – specifically, the fight or flight type. Actually, this ‘animal instinct’ in our brains is what triggers most of our ‘feel good’ chemicals. They’re our brain’s effort to relax and focus us in the face of something like a carnivorous dinosaur the size of a small house. So, BDNF gets released to protect our ability to act in perceived moments of, “What the ...?!?!”.

While it’s doing this, it’s also protecting our neurons – and even growing new ones – in three key areas of the brain: hippocampus, cortex, and basal forebrain. BDNF is also known to energize and reboot our neurons, helping brains to clear out distractions and become more focused. It is being studied as a key chemical in memory, language, and learning. BDNF increases by about threefold during exercise.

Transient Hypofrontality – You Are Not Imagining It

Transient Hypofrontality isn’t the sexiest turn of phrase – and actually – it involves some super-technical understandings of the brain. We’re gonna have to work out a lot more before we can fully comprehend it all. But the simplest description of this complicated function seems to be as follows: Transient Hypofrontality is a relaxation of the ‘right brain’ (aka the practical side) – allowing greater access to our left brain (aka creative side). Studies have shown that this transient state of mind happens during and immediately after exercise. A lot of creative thinking and problem-solving can be accessed during Transient Hypofrontality. It is highly recommended that any brilliant ideas and insights get recorded before the moment passes. Then, that good old BDNF can take over and turn inspiration into realization.

Stay tuned for more fun facts about the science of brains and brawn. We’ve got a few fascinating studies to share and some more science to back it up. Thanks for reading, and for all that you do to promote better health and well-being.

Why One Gym Lost 50% of Their Patrons Last Year

Have any of your patrons complained about others blasting their music? It happens more than we want to admit. Some people just aren’t courteous.

People bring almost as many iPods as water bottles to the gym. It’s no secret why. Listening to music can be an awesome way to stay motivated while lifting or hitting the treadmill.

The problem is, some people don’t use earpieces. They workout with a few of their buddies and end up playing songs for their entire group. Most of them don't intend to disrupt anyone else, but they unwittingly create an unpleasant atmosphere.

This can cause a lot of problems for a gym. One gym lost around 50% of its members over the past year. A lot of factors played a role. But interviews with former customers found a common complaint. Older members were sick of coming in and hearing young guys blasting their rap music. The manager never did anything about it, so they bailed.

So you need to take it seriously. Recognize that these patrons probably aren't trying to cause issues, but be firm with them on it.

Here are some tips that you will want to follow.

Find a Tactful Way to Address the Issue

While you need to get your point across, you need to do so in a polite way. Instead of just railing on customers that have been blasting their music, try to explain why. Let them know that having equipment around can be a safety issue. People can trip over speakers. They can also steal their MP3 Player if it is unattended.

Of course, you don’t want to minimize the fact that it is an inconvenience to other customers. The goal is to show that you are looking out for everyone.

Offer Reasonable Compromises

Your goal is to try to make everyone’s experience as pleasant as possible. While enforcing rules on music usage is important, being too rigid with them can cause issues of their own. People may feel you are being unreasonable if you don’t let them play their music in a back room that nobody ever uses. If people make these requests, you can tell them you will make exceptions for certain areas, provided the music is kept at a reasonable volume.

Be Consistent

Being polite and reasonable is important, but you can’t be a pushover. Don’t make exceptions for your drinking buddy or the kid brother of the girl you met on Tinder. You also don’t want to get in the habit of saying it is okay to play music while other people aren’t around, because they may notice when other patrons come in.

Enforce the rules consistently and things should go much more smoothly.

Fitness’ Geniuses

Many of history’s most profound and prolific brainiacs, creative prodigies and business moguls have prioritized physical fitness, incorporating it into their daily routines. In fact, countless steps, swims, rides, reps and stretches have resulted in some of the world’s most influential discoveries, inventions, creations, and compositions – not to mention millions of energized hours of productivity, focus and plain old hard work.

All of these people have had two things in common: regular physical activity and the claim that such physical activity has directly impacted their career success. All of these people understood the power of movement and sweat. Below is just a brief list of fitness’ geniuses:

Charles Dickens was addicted to a daily three-hour walk around London.

Tchaikovsky and Beethoven were unwavering walkers, too – as was Freud – who could be considered an original power-walker.

Alan Turing rowed and ran marathons. He also regularly jogged the 10-mile commute back and forth to his laboratory.

All-around genius Hypatia was also an all-around athlete. She was a polymath and a three-sport athlete (horseback riding, swimming, and rowing). In Hypatia’s case, her sports program was purposefully designed to keep her mind sharp.

Einstein was an avid cycler. Ideas often occurred to him while he rode his bike, including the theory of relativity.

Nikola Tesla – walker and toe-xerciser. What is a toe-xerciser? It’s a person who exercises their toes by curling and uncurling them. Tesla claimed that this helped stimulate his brain, but we think it was more likely his daily 10 mile constitutionals.

Neil deGrasse Tyson wrestled in high school and college. Apparently, he hasn’t lost his touch. He chalks his wrestling and lifting accomplishments up to physics. Give a little, take a little.

Mark Cuban takes kickboxing and aerobics classes. He’s a six-day-a-week worker-outer.

Warren Buffet keeps active to burn calories, offsetting some admittedly not-so-healthy eating habits.

Oprah Winfrey is a cardio and crunch fanatic.

Charles Darwin took three 45 minute walks each day to keep his brain strong.

The Dalai Lama has been known to meditate while taking morning walks. In inclement weather, he’s done both on a treadmill.

Barack Obama works out almost daily, for almost an hour a day. He claims that as a youth, starting a regular workout routine helped him become focused and disciplined. It also made him a better student.

The list goes on and on (and on). From musicians to mathematicians to masters of design, movement is key. There are real, tangible reasons behind all of this. Some may not be surprising at all. Others will be eye-opening. All are based on body science. Our next email will delve into this. In the meantime, keep building bodies and brains. And keep doing all the other great stuff you do.

MIS Update - Event Booking Enhancements

We released an update on 11/04/2017, which contains the following changes.

For example, if you put 60 in this field, the member will be allowed to book this event any time before 60 minutes of the start of the event. As soon as 60 minutes before the event occurs, the system will not allow any more pre booking. If you set this field to 0, pre booking will be allowed up to the start of the event.

10 million years ago, fitness was just part of life. Between hunting, gathering and running from predators, keeping in shape wasn’t a choice. And it wasn’t a challenge. Prehistoric men, women and children didn’t have to find time in their busy schedules for sports and gyms. They didn’t have to ‘commit’ to fitness. They stayed on the move or they didn’t have any way to survive.

Today, fitness is a choice – an extracurricular activity that for many, is simply not a priority. The United States isn’t alone in its lackadaisical attitude toward keeping in shape. Sedentary lifestyles, obesity and a deterioration of general health abound the world over.

There are many reasons for this. The vast majority of humans are no longer trying to survive in the wilderness. Modern conveniences have impacted the amount of movement that was once incorporated into everyday life. Stress causes people to want to shut out the world and curl up with a box of donuts. Long, draining work days leave little time or desire for ‘getting to the gym’. An hypnotic addiction to technology doesn’t help the cause either. Is this the beginning of a decline from which the world won’t recover?

Probably not. After all, this isn’t the first time in history that fitness has seen a downturn in participation. In fact, physical fitness has had a few dark ages.

For starters, there was the Dark Ages. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the pursuit of physical perfection in the Western world went from being glorified to being basically shunned. A world at war with barbarians, plagues and poverty became dogmatic in its adherence to religious beliefs. This meant, among other things, that taking pride in the body’s appearance, was discouraged – and, in fact – a sin. A religious-based education was solely about hitting the books. The idea of developing the mind and body as a formal, holistic pursuit became ignored and, for more than a few centuries, forgotten.

The pursuit of physical fitness resurged during The Renaissance, a time of relative peace and prosperity. Slowly but persistently, it spread throughout the western world, arriving in the early 1800s, by way of German immigrants, in America. And thanks to institutions like public school gymnasiums and the YMCA, it caught on big, for a while. It took about a hundred years before the United States experienced its first fitness downturn. It happened during a time quite different than the dark ages, though.

The Roaring Twenties was, arguably, one of the most prosperous and celebratory times in United States history. Following the end of World War I, America was, basically, partying. Food, drink and lavish fun was the pursuit of the decade. Working out at a gym lingered, barely, in the background. During the Great Depression, it became obliterated. Fortunately, it would find its way back into the American conscience – and then some. And thanks to pioneers like Jack LaLanne, Joe Gold, Jane Fonda, Bruce Lee, Richard Simmons, Shaun Thompson (and many more), fitness has seen a century of becoming more diversified and accessible than ever.

Today, gym owners are facing unique challenges. Those of us who love it, and devote our career to its pursuit, are marketing to different times, and different attitudes. But through passion, ingenuity and devotion to ‘spreading the good word’ of fitness, tomorrow’s revolutionaries will rise to, and from, these challenges. And then some. “That which is used - develops. That which is not used wastes away.” ― Hippocrates

MIS Update Details

We released an update on 10/16/2017, which contains the following changes.

The fitness industry is growing and competition is tough. Even in the smallest of towns, there is often more than one business that offers some type of fitness training. With such stiff competition in the fitness industry, it is very important to constantly find ways to make your fitness center better than your competition. Often there are simple things your business can start to do that will make you stand above your competitors.

Learn All Of Your Customers' Names

People tend to feel more welcome when they go to a place where they get greeted by their first name. Remembering and using all of your customers' names will make people feel as if the gym is their second home.

Help Customers With Their Workout

If you notice ways you can help your customers improve their workout, tell them. It is also a good idea to have personal trainers on staff to help answer customers' questions and to help them get the most out of their workout routine.

Send Out Regular E-Mails To All Of Your Customers

Sending out weekly e-mails to your customers makes them know that you care. Develop a weekly mailing list and send your customers motivational articles and health tips.

Get Feedback From Your Patrons

Ask your customers how much they enjoy using your gym and inquire about ways you can improve. Surveys are a good way to find out from your customers what your business does well and which areas you can improve.

Sometimes it is the little things that help add value to your business. In the highly competitive fitness industry, it is important to constantly improve your business. There are companies out there that can help you improve your fitness business.

MIS Minor Update Details

We released a minor update on 09/24/2017, which updated the report viewer to the latest updated components. Back in the day, fitness gyms had to have someone at the door checking membership cards or taking money whenever the gym was open. There are many gyms now that operate without a staff member at all. Many gym owners have found that new technology can aid in the operations of a fitness gym. Many gyms are incorporating new ways to keep their gym clean and attractive to customers.

Use An Advanced Security System To Keep The Gym Open When No Staff Is There

Now many gyms use card reader locks so that customers can use the gym twenty-four hours a day. There are security systems that stay engaged until a customer runs their card. The card systems can also help you keep track of when your customers came and how long they stayed. A high-tech surveillance system also helps you keep your gym secure when no staff is present.

Use Cameras To Make Sure The Gym Stays In Order At All Times

It is a good idea to have cameras inside your gym for security and insurance reasons. There are now cameras out that you can access and control from any remote location. Cameras not only help with safety, they also tell you when the fitness center needs maintenance and cleaning.

Automation Technology Can Make Your Gym Operate More Efficiently

New automation technology can do things like turn lights on only when someone is present in the area and needs it. The building's heat can also be adjusted when someone is in the room. Automation helps save energy and a lot of costs in the long run.

New technologies have made operating a fitness center easier and cost-effective than before. There are also many gym software programs that can help you management all of the paperwork side of the gym business.

4 Ways to Increase Gym Membership Retention

In addition to increasing memberships, it's important for gym owners to retain current customers. Not only are they your largest source of revenue, but they also are your best marketing, as positive reviews and word-of-mouth go a long way when it comes to recruitment.

If you find that your retention rates are beginning to dwindle, there are some simple things you can do to halt the cancellations. Here are four ways to easily increase your gym membership retention.

Eliminate the pain points. Increase customer satisfaction by monitoring their experiences and eliminating any pain points. For example, do members have trouble accessing the class schedule? Are machines frequently unavailable? Is the water fountain oftentimes out-of-order?

Say thank you. Your customers have a lot of workout facilities from which to choose, so it's important to let them know that you appreciate them for choosing your business. Do this regularly.

Ask and act. Your customers are your best source of information about satisfaction, so ask them! Document both happy and unhappy customers through periodic surveys, then act to make any deficits better.

Go the extra mile. Take the time to genuinely make your customers feel special. This might include being an active listener, making recommendations for activities that members might enjoy, or implementing customer suggestions within the facility.

If you're looking for ways to increase your gym membership retention, start by implementing the above four tips. You'll find that your customers are happier, your cancellations are minimized, and your retention rates are increased.
